bne: EAGE 2009 - Amsterdam Petrophysical Study on Selection of Potential Layers for Hydraulic Fracturing Operation B. Habibnia* (Petroleum University of Technology) & S.R. Shadizadeh (Petroleum University of Technology) SUMMARY Hydraulic fracturing is a process applied to boreholes to improve the ability of reservoir fluids to flow towards the hole and be recovered. Fractures can play a very important role in the productivity of low permeability formations. Ahwaz oil field is one of the largest fields in Iran, which is mainly composed of limestone and few layers of dolomite. The petrophysical studies in this field show that because of sufficient amount of oil in place and good porosity with low permeability, its beds can be good candidates for hydraulic fracturing operation. The rock mechanics, properties of six wells in the field and results of laboratory tests together with measurements of density, stress and fracture gradient are carefully inspected. The mineralogy and petrography of various rocks are examined under microscope. XRD of ten samples and percentage of clay minerals are measured. Selected wells are also correlated based on porosity logs. Finally the suitable layers for hydraulic fracturing are selected. Calculation of stress gradient, water saturation and porosity and permeability in studied wells in Bangestan reservoir, indicate that the wells B/ AZ3 and B/AZ4 in Ilam formation are good candidates for hydraulic fracturing.
